Communication was excellent, they arrived right on time, and they delivered exactly what we asked for. They even went above and beyond by removing and cleaning up some old, large stumps we had. As a bird enthusiast, I was especially touched by the care and respect they showed around the large natural nesting area on our property. They took the extra time and had incredible patience while carefully working around the nests and eggs, making sure the birds and their habitat remained safe and undisturbed. This was incredibly meaningful to me, and I cannot express how appreciative I am of their thoughtfulness and compassion. Can a tree that is already struggling be saved?

Often, if you catch it before the roots are gone. Most decline we see is not disease, it is site conditions: compacted soil, roots cut during a build, grade changed over the root zone, or water sitting where it did not used to. Fix the underlying cause and a lot of trees come back. What we cannot bring back is a tree that has lost most of its root system or has advanced decay in the trunk.

What actually kills mature trees during construction?

Three things, and rarely the ones people expect. Cutting roots for foundations, trenches and driveways. Compacting the soil under the canopy with repeated equipment traffic, which crushes the pore space roots need to breathe. And changing the grade by piling fill over the root zone. The tree usually looks fine for two or three years and then dies, long after everyone has forgotten what caused it.

Should I protect trees before building work starts?

Yes, and it is the cheapest tree money you will ever spend. Fence off the critical root zone before anything arrives on site, keep all traffic, spoil and material storage outside that line, and route trenches around rather than through. Doing this costs a few hundred dollars. Replacing a mature live oak is not something you can buy at any price.

What are the early signs a tree is in decline?

Smaller leaves than previous years, thinning at the top of the canopy, dieback starting at the branch tips, early autumn colour, an unusually heavy seed or acorn crop, and sprouts coming out of the trunk low down. Any of those means the tree is under stress and telling you about it. That is the moment to act, not two years later when limbs start dropping.

Will fertilizer fix it?

Usually not, and it is the most common thing people try first. A stressed tree in compacted or waterlogged soil does not have a nutrient shortage, it has a root problem, and feeding it can push growth the roots cannot support. Soil decompaction, correcting drainage, proper mulching out to the drip line and watering through drought do far more than fertilizer.

How long does a tree take to recover?

Years, not weeks. Trees respond on a slow clock, and a tree that took three years to decline will take at least that long to look right again. What you should see in the first season after treatment is that things stop getting worse. Visible improvement in canopy density usually shows up in year two or three.
