What makes tree work different in Effingham County

Effingham sits on the coastal plain: sandy loam over a high water table, with the Savannah River basin on one side and the Lower Ogeechee on the other. That ground drains fast in a dry spell and turns to soup in a wet one.

That matters because of what grows here. Loblolly and slash pine run tall on shallow root plates. Live oaks and water oaks spread wide and carry a lot of sail. Sweetgum and laurel oak rot from the inside while still looking fine from the driveway. Put four inches of rain in the ground, add a tropical system pushing 40 to 60 mph gusts, and it is usually the whole tree that goes over, root plate and all, not just a limb.

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 and peaks from mid-August into October. The trees worth worrying about are the ones already leaning, already hollow, or already sitting over your roof. Those are the ones we want to look at before the storm, not after.
