Communication was excellent, they arrived right on time, and they delivered exactly what we asked for. They even went above and beyond by removing and cleaning up some old, large stumps we had. As a bird enthusiast, I was especially touched by the care and respect they showed around the large natural nesting area on our property. They took the extra time and had incredible patience while carefully working around the nests and eggs, making sure the birds and their habitat remained safe and undisturbed. What is cabling and bracing, in plain terms?

It is hardware installed in a tree to support a weak point. A cable is a flexible steel or synthetic line run high in the canopy between two stems, so they hold each other rather than levering apart in the wind. A brace is a threaded rod through the union itself, used when a split has already started. Together they buy years out of a tree that would otherwise have to come down.

Which trees actually need it?

The classic candidates around here are live oaks with long heavy horizontal limbs reaching out over a driveway or roof, and any tree with two co-dominant stems meeting in a tight V, especially with included bark in the crotch. Also trees that have already cracked at a union but are otherwise sound. If a limb makes you nervous every time the wind picks up, that is the one.

Will the hardware hurt the tree?

No, when it is installed correctly. The tree seals around the hardware the same way it seals any wound, and a properly placed cable sits high in the canopy where it carries load without restricting movement. Trees need to flex to build strength, so the aim is to limit the extreme movement that breaks things, not to lock the tree rigid.

Is it permanent?

No, and anyone who tells you it is has not thought it through. Hardware needs inspecting every few years and eventually replacing, because the tree keeps growing around it and cables can loosen or the anchor points can change. Budget for a look every three years or so, and after any major storm.

Is cabling cheaper than just removing the tree?

Usually, and by a wide margin on a big tree. Removing a mature live oak next to a house is one of the more expensive jobs there is. Supporting it is a fraction of that, keeps the shade and the value the tree adds to the property, and buys you years. It only makes sense on a tree that is otherwise healthy though.

Can a cabled tree still fail in a hurricane?

Yes. Cabling reduces risk, it does not eliminate it, and we will not tell you otherwise. In an extreme wind event a supported tree can still come down, particularly if the root plate goes. What cabling reliably prevents is the everyday failure, the summer thunderstorm that splits an over-extended limb off a union that was always going to give.
